Abstract:

Photographic prints, negatives, contact sheets, slides and digital files. Projects (subjects) chiefly: San Francisco Opera, "Frisco", "No Vacancy" and urban renewal / gentrifcation / displacement in San Francisco's South of Market (SOMA) district, North Beach (including Poets series and Cafe Society series), Haight-Ashbury street portraits circa 2018-2022, Baja California, and Mexico. Work is chiefly black and white, except for the Haight-Ashbury series which comprises digital image files and color digital prints.

Sets of prints from many projects represented here were previously acquired by the Bancroft Library and remain separately cataloged. These sets are: Kurt Herbert Adler and the San Francisco Opera (BANC PIC 2003.035), Cafe Society photographs: Beat poets and North Beach (BANC PIC 2003.083), No Vacancy (BANC PIC 2003.082), and Baja California (BANC PIC 2005.128).
Bancroft Library holds additional collections of Nowinksi photographs: California Native American photograph archive (BANC PIC 2006.079), and Photographs of Northern California Jewish life (BANC PIC 2012.031).
